This site at Pelletstown, Castleknock, was previously monitored by Kara Ward (Marketing Suite at Royal Canal Park) in early 2005. Previous monitoring in Phase I (to the west of Phase II) by Bill Frazer (Excavations 2003, No. 467, 02E1823) led to the excavation of a stone-lined long cist burial. Three unenclosed human inhumations were also discovered.
Prior to the development this land was largely greenfield and once formed part of the demesne of Pelletstown House. There are no recorded archaeological sites within the area. The southern side of the development is defined by the towpath of the Royal Canal, between the 8th and 10th lock. Post-medieval iron production remains are located on and along the Tolka, north of River Road and outside the site.
Monitoring at the site from June to July 2005 revealed that some areas had been used to stockpile earth at an earlier phase of the development. The monitoring of the removal of the underlying subsoil did not reveal any features or soils of archaeological significance.
