The site of the proposed development was previously assessed on the basis of three phases of test-trenching by Ian W. Doyle, Margaret Gowen and the writer (Excavations 2000, No. 308, Excavations 2001, No. 435 and Excavations 2004, No. 610). No features of archaeological significance were detected during any of the phases of the assessment of the site. Due to the extent of disturbance and the intensity of modern activity on the site, it was likely that any archaeological features would be visible as cut features into subsoil.
The Kilmainham area is noted for the presence of Viking Age artefacts recovered during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The main Galway–Dublin railway line defines the northern boundary of the site. The site is located 20m to the west of the historic Bully’s Acre cemetery.
A rigorous programme was devised to oversee the bulk excavation of material during the construction phase of the development. The northern and eastern portions of the site contained heavy concrete bases for steel uprights associated with the earlier industrial complex on the site. The basements of two houses (identified by Doyle, Excavations 2001) were excavated and fully recorded prior to removal. No features or soils of archaeological significance were encountered during the bulk removal of material from the site.
