An assessment was carried out on this site, which lies c. 400m south-west of SMR 14:20, listed as a ‘dwelling site’. This dwelling can be identified as a manor house/castle which belonged to Sir James Ware, the notable antiquarian, in the 17th century. The house is described at this date as a brick house with barns and stables, as well as a garden and orchards.
Nine test-trenches were excavated across the site. Much of the site had been extensively truncated by the insertion of various services, including gas mains, ESB cables, sewerage pipes and drains, and as a result much of the site was unavailable for testing. In areas where test-trenches were excavated, it was found that in many places the ground had been made up to a uniform level with dumps of rubble and topsoil. The assessment did not find any archaeological deposits or features in the areas tested nor any indication that the ‘dwelling site’ complex extended as far as the site in question.
