Monitoring of groundworks associated with the development of the former Harbour Master’s Quarters, Crofton Road, Dún Laoghaire, took place intermittently over a three-month period from June to August 2005. A row of cottages along Crofton Road were demolished as part of the works, but the recently restored Harbour Lodge, which dates from the 19th century and is a protected structure, is to be incorporated into the new development. The site, which had previously acted as a depot for the OPW and had a concreted ground surface throughout, is to be excavated to a depth of 5m. The stratigraphy consisted of a concrete and rubble overburden above a light-grey/brown silt with medium rounded stones. Beneath this material was blue/grey boulder clay overlying the granite bedrock. Groundworks are not currently taking place but are expected to be resumed in the near future. To date, no archaeological features or artefacts have been discovered.
