A test excavation was carried out on 3 and 4 March 2005 in the rear yard of the Shelbourne Hotel, within the footprint of the new extension. The original core of the hotel is located at the site of an earlier building, Kerry House, formerly the home of the Earl of Shelbourne. Two test-trenches were excavated at the site. No archaeological features or deposits were identified.
