An assessment was carried out at the site of a proposed hotel complex. As part of this assessment two test-trenches and an engineering test-pit were opened at No. 9 Rutland Place and one test-trench was opened at Nos 6, 7 and 8 Cavendish Row. These revealed that the site had been severely truncated by 19th-/20th-century basements and modern cuts. The only feature of archaeological interest noted was the remains of a double-chambered sunken latrine. As this appeared to be an isolated feature, it was agreed that it should be resolved under the testing licence. The latrine was a substantial structure that measured 5.2m in length, 2.3m in width and a maximum of 3m in depth. It consisted of an outer limestone wall and an internal dividing wall of red brick. The morphology of this feature and the finds recovered from it suggest that it dated to the late 18th century. No other archaeological features were identified on site.
