Two trenches were opened across this development site at the corner of Summerhill and Portland Row. The trenches cut through the backfilled cellars of demolished Georgian houses at the street frontages and came down immediately on to subsoil towards the rear, where the ground appears to have been scarped away when the houses were built around the turn of the 19th century.
