Test-trenches mechanically excavated on the site on 11 February 2005 revealed the well-preserved remains of a tannery at the centre. The site was subsequently excavated between 25 February and 21 March 2005. The remains of part of a large late 19th-century tannery that went out of use in the early 20th century, and which is shown on OS maps, was uncovered. Timber-lined tanks of three different sizes arranged in two blocks of five and two rows were excavated. The tanks contained the typical oak bark chippings in their bases and were filled with the refuse from an ironworks at the end of the 19th century.
