The mechanical excavation of geotechnical test-pits at 5–7 and 8 Hanover Quay, Dublin 2, was monitored in early December 2005. The site of the proposed development is located at the Grand Canal Dock, outside the medieval walled town of Dublin, at the west side of the junction with Hanover Quay and Benson Street. Previous buildings that had been located on the site were demolished to ground-floor slab level in 2005. At the time of monitoring this was a level site of open ground with tarmac and concrete surfacing.
The monitoring revealed a high concentration of 19th- and 20th-century material at the northern and south-eastern portions of the site. None of the material identified during the excavation dated to earlier than the 19th century. This constitutes Phase 1 of investigations at this site. The bulk excavation of material for the site shall commence in 2006 under the direction of Teresa Bolger.
