A test excavation was carried out on 5 and 10 October 2005. Three trenches were excavated at the site and the basement of No. 33 was inspected on removal of the existing ground slab and flooring. No archaeological features or deposits were noted. The historical and cartographic evidence indicates that the site was undeveloped before Gardiner Street was set out (from c. 1787 onwards). It is possible that the terrace to which Nos 33 and 34 belong was not built until after 1800, possibly even as late as the 1820s.
