Excavations were conducted at the site of a proposed development on Digges Lane in Dublin between July and October 2005. Medieval remains were found on the site in the form of drainage gullies and refuse pits. A section of a ditch, which may represent the enclosure ditch of the medieval church of St Peter’s, was found on one part of the site but it extended beyond the limits of the site to the south and west. Unfortunately, due to safety concerns, the ditch could not be fully excavated, but it will be preserved in situ beneath the proposed development.
Post-medieval remains on the site consisted of cellars, several kilns and a well. Modern building and demolition activity had disturbed large parts of the site. This site appears to have been situated between the ecclesiastical communities of St Peter’s and St Stephen’s during the medieval period and used primarily as a dumping ground.
