Testing was carried out at No. 76 Dame Street in advance of redevelopment of the site, on the eastern side of the former course of the River Poddle and just beyond the location of the medieval gate on Dame Street. At the time of testing, the proposed development would see a basement added in the enclosed rear of the property, to a similar level to the existing basement.
A number of trenches were opened to determine the nature of the deposits which would be removed as part of the proposed development. These trenches revealed traces of a late 18th- or earlier 19th-century basement, which had been partially destroyed and backfilled in the 20th century. Traces of the flagged blackstone basement floor were recorded at roughly the same level as the existing basement at the front of the property and coincided with the proposed extent of the impact of the redevelopment.
