Test excavation took place at the Five Lamps development, Dublin 8, on 22 August 2005. The site is wedge-shaped, located at the junction of Amiens Street and Portland Row. The southern boundary of the site is on Amiens Street and the northern boundary is on Killarney Street. The Five Lamps development is outside the zone of archaeological potential for Dublin (SMR 18:20). The site was assessed on the basis of three mechanically excavated test-trenches.
A similar stratigraphical sequence was recorded in each trench: the western portion of the site contained modern cellars, while the remainder of the site was untouched ground and consisted of mixed clay, which overlay natural gravel. No soils or features of archaeological importance were detected during the test excavation on the site. The western portion of the site contained a cellar that was found to overlay natural sands and gravels. The excavation of the test-trenches in the remaining portions of the site revealed the lack of any features of archaeological significance.
