Monitoring of the excavation of foundation trenches was undertaken on 10 and 11 January 2005 at 19 White’s Villas, Dalkey, Co. Dublin, in advance of the construction of a house in the garden of the existing dwelling. The site lies within the medieval core of Dalkey town. In November 2004 test-trenching identified medieval subsoil-cut features at about 1.2m below the existing ground surface (Excavations 2004, No. 494, 04E1529). In January 2005, informed by these results, foundation trenches were excavated to an average depth of 0.9m below the existing ground level, thus not impacting on the known subsurface archaeological deposits. The foundation trenches were machine-excavated through modern made-up ground and cultivation soil containing 19th-century pottery sherds. No features or deposits of archaeological significance were noted during the monitoring of the foundation trenches.
