An assessment, including the excavation of test-trenches, was carried out on 16 May 2005 in advance of a housing development at 20 Castle Street. Following the demolition of a house in the location, two parallel test-trenches were excavated along the line of the proposed strip foundations for the development. Stratigraphy was consistent within both trenches. The upper layer was comprised of made ground containing modern building rubble overlying a layer of dark blackish-grey sandy silt containing many cockle shells and occasional charcoal inclusions, probably representing early modern domestic waste. This latter overlay natural subsoil. Within Trench 1, a cavity 3.5m in width had been formed by a large natural granite boulder and was filled by the grey silt. The remains of a foundation wall from the demolished house were uncovered along the southern side of Trench 2.
