A test excavation was carried out at Castleknock College on 20–23 June 2005 and again on 15 August 2005. The site is located about 1.5km south-west of Castleknock village and lies within the zone of archaeological potential of a castle, a motte and bailey and two wells. A second site, which includes a possible rath and the ruins of a windmill, is located to the south-east within the grounds of the college.
Six test-trenches were excavated in the area between the Cregan Building and McNamara House East. Nothing of archaeological significance was discovered in any of the trenches. The only surviving deposits were either modern or associated with the 19th-century construction of the college buildings, which also removed any archaeological features that may have been associated with either the castle or Windmill Hill.
