Monitoring was carried out at the site of a residential development on high ground at Glebe South, Balrothery, within the zone of archaeological potential of Balrothery settlement. The site is adjacent to St Peter’s Church (SMR 5:57(03)) and graveyard (5:57(05)), the former Glebe House and grounds and a later medieval tower-house (5:57(06)). An assessment and testing had been carried out by Christine Baker in 2000 (Excavations 2000, No. 208, 00E0034). An area of 40m by 40m was identified in the northern corner of the development as being archaeologically sensitive. This area was preserved in situ as a green space. The remainder of the development was stripped of topsoil.
Post-medieval and agricultural features were identified throughout the area stripped. The agricultural furrows ran north–south and extended from the brow of the hill downslope. They average 0.4m in width and were relatively evenly spaced. The fill was consistent in all of the furrows, a grey/brown stony clay.
Four post-medieval features were identified throughout the development area. They comprised an irregular-shaped sporadic metalled surface, two field boundaries and a large pit filled with post-medieval and early modern dumped material.
