Pre-development testing was carried out on 29 March 2005 at two adjacent sites in advance of the construction of two dwellings with effluent treatment units at Dungorman townland, Castlefinn, Co. Donegal. The proposed developments were located within the archaeological constraint for a standing stone site. There were no extant features within the proposed development sites.
The testing consisted of the excavation (by machine) of eight trenches, sited to cover the ground disturbance involved in the proposed developments. The trenches measured between 13.7m and 32.9m long. They were 1–1.35m wide and 0.1–0.7m deep.
Below the topsoil (which measured 0.1–0.3m in depth) were sterile natural subsoils (orange/rust/
grey/brown friable/loose sandy silt loam with frequent rocks, grey/brown friable silt loam, grey loose loamy sand and dark-grey/brown plastic silty clay loam). Six sherds of modern pottery were recovered from the topsoil. The testing revealed nothing of archaeological significance.
