Monitoring of topsoil-stripping was carried out at 21 The Loughan, on the eastern bank of the Bann, on 7 and 8 July 2005 in advance of a new development to replace the existing property with three new dwellings. A fortification (SMR 7:23), described as ‘a small D-shaped platform’, is recorded as being within the grounds of 19 The Loughan, the neighbouring property. However, as the limits of the D-shaped platform are unknown, there was a possibility that the fortification and platform may have extended into the limits of the development.
Whilst four worked flints were recovered from the topsoil—two small blades, a butt-trimmed flake and a combination tool (end scraper/burin)—monitoring did not uncover any archaeological deposits and topsoil was found to immediately overlie undisturbed subsoil.
