Testing was undertaken at Maulavanig, Kealkill, Bantry, Co. Cork, in accordance with a condition of planning permission for a single house and associated ancillary works. Four trenches were placed within the proposed development area, in total measuring 93m. The site is c. 40m south-west of a ringfort situated on a steeply sloping hill of pastureland.
A bank and ditch type feature was exposed in Trench 2, running approximately north–south, but the bedding agent for the stone facing on the western side was found to be a sand/lime mortar mix, and the organic peat found in the fill of the shallow ditch to the east was of an uncompressed and not fully degraded nature, suggesting a fairly modern date for the feature. No other features of archaeological significance were exposed.
