An impact assessment involving a test excavation was requested by Cork County Council prior to planning approval for the construction of an extension to a dwelling house at Gortigrenane, Minane Bridge, Co. Cork. The site is within the constraint zone of an 18th-century country house which was formally the seat of the Daunt family but passed through marriage to the Stoughton family in the early 19th century. The house was inhabited until 1962 but is now derelict and the second and third floors were taken down in 2005, as they were deemed to be structurally unsafe.
A single test-trench was excavated, placed to the immediate north of the house along the footprint of the proposed extension. It measured 6m in length and was excavated to a maximum depth of 0.55m. A thin layer of concrete which overlay the area of the proposed extension was initially removed. This immediately overlay the natural subsoil, which consisted of a loose light to mid-brown shale sediment. No features or finds of archaeological importance were noted during the course of this work.
