Four test-trenches were opened at a development site in the western suburbs of Cork city before construction of an apartment complex. The stratigraphy in all of the trenches consisted of a 1.5–2.5m layer of modern make-up material overlying the mid-yellowish-brown, gravel-rich boulder clay. The make-up material consisted of building rubble, containing much brick, modern pottery and bottles. A test-trench in the north-west corner of the development site revealed an oil-enriched soil at a depth of 1.3m below modern ground level and excavation in this area halted due to the potential presence of a subsurface oil storage tank. The test-trenches began to fill up with ground-water at the level of the natural boulder clay in all areas of the site. There were no archaeological features or finds uncovered in any of the test-trenches opened at this development site.
