2005:220 - CORK: Abbey Street/Travers Street, Cork

Two test-trenches were excavated by machine across the site to a maximum depth of 1.1m. It is proposed to lay foundations to a maximum depth of 0.8m. The stratigraphy in both trenches was similar, comprising a concrete floor directly overlaying a 0.4m depth of brown, loose, rubble fill. This in turn overlay a c. 0.5–0.7m fill of black material containing brick, along with small amounts of slate and glass. This material produced two modern pottery sherds. A concrete floor lay beneath this at a depth of 1.1m. No finds or features of an archaeological nature were noted.
