Two test-trenches were opened on the site at Coolea, Macroom, which is in the environs of a megalithic tomb. In both cases, when the reedy/grassy growth on the surface was removed, the ground underneath was found to be a thick peat. Very little of this peat was penetrated, as it was soft and shaky underfoot. The builder at this point indicated that he did not intend to penetrate the bog at any stage, but rather that he would raise the ground level on the site by 1–2m. In view of this information, it was decided not to proceed with any further testing, as no subsurface disturbance is to take place on the site. No archaeological finds or levels were noted in the trenches that were opened.
