Monitoring was undertaken on behalf of Cork County Council in relation to the upgrading of a sewerage treatment plant in Conva, Ballyhooly. The site is located within and adjacent to the zone of archaeological potential of a complex of sites which includes a tower-house and bawn, two churches and two graveyards. Cork County Council proposed to upgrade an existing septic tank to a new wastewater treatment plant with access road and two new manholes. The site measures c. 0.15ha in size. The new access road utilised the existing right of way in the area of the entrance and demolished c. 3m of a stone farmyard wall. The road was constructed to the north of Christ Church boundary wall and in the area of the proposed development site. The manholes will be placed on the route of the existing sewer and the existing sewer pipes will not have to be replaced. The proposed treatment plant will extend c. 3m below ground and 3m above ground.
The area of the access road was stripped of topsoil and covered with terram and topsoil. A buffer zone of 1m was established between the edge of the access road and the graveyard wall. The area of the sewerage treatment plan was stripped of topsoil. No archaeological features or artefacts were recorded.
