Test-trenching was carried out at the site of a proposed dwelling house at Spital Lane, located c. 200m to the west of the zone of archaeological potential surrounding Cloyne village. The topsoil layer was composed of a dark-brown silty clay, measuring 0.2–0.5m deep, and this contained occasional sherds of 19th/20th-century pottery and brick fragments. The natural subsoil layer was a mid-yellowish-brown silty clay, truncated by occasional ploughmarks. There were no archaeological features or artefacts uncovered in any of the trenches opened at this site.
