Two test-trenches were opened on the site for a proposed dwelling house directly opposite the road from the cathedral in Killaloe. The first trench was stopped at a depth of c. 0.8m at a layer with a spread of stones. Sandstone formed a high proportion of the stone and it was felt that the layers could be connected with the construction of either of the medieval churches opposite the site. The second trench was stopped at a depth of 0.7m when the machine started to come down on a burnt deposit. Over the material of potential archaeological significance was a thick deposit of what appeared to be garden soil. It was suggested that a raft foundation might circumvent the archaeological problem by sealing in the deposits for future generations.
