The site of the proposed development, ten three-bedroomed houses in three two-storey blocks, access and related services, is located behind the church facing onto Church Street, Portaliff townland, Killeshandra, Co. Cavan. It consists of an area of rough ground adjacent to the lakeshore and a flatter area, until recently used as a carpark, between the rougher land and the extant church boundary wall to the south. The site currently consists of an overgrown carpark with obvious gravel surface to the south and an area of uneven ground due to considerable dumping of material from the factory across the road from the church over the last three decades.
Seven test-trenches were excavated by machine across the site in May 2005. Trenches 1–3 measured 10m long and Trenches 4–7 measured 70m long. All trenches were 1.25m wide and were excavated to the level of undisturbed natural. No evidence of archaeological activity was revealed.
