A deep curvilinear slot-trench was identified close to the existing N9 roadway during Contract 3 testing on the N9/N10 Kilcullen to Waterford road scheme. Two vertical flat stones (which continued beyond the limits of the box-section) were identified. The steeply sloping sides of the feature, coupled with the presence of these stones, meant that the base of the feature could not be identified. The stones were interpreted as being packing stones or a supporting element for a structure that as yet has not been fully exposed. A possible associated post-hole was noted 2m to the north of this slot-trench and a second possible post-hole was noted c. 3.5m to the south. It is possible that this feature represents part of a structure, perhaps a ring-ditch or house of some form, as yet of uncertain date. This feature remains for resolution in the next phase of archaeological works.
