An archaeological investigation was undertaken on this site in advance of a proposed office development, as it lies within the zone of archaeological potential and it has been suggested that the town wall passed through the site. Six cuttings, each measuring 10m by 2m, were mechanically excavated.
The construction of the present carpark had evidently necessitated much consolidation in places, as the tarmacadam and hardcore overlay a thick layer of rubble in the trenches closer to the river, with the entire modern surface up to 1.14m thick. This overlay a deposit of garden soil containing 19th-century pottery, glass, etc., 0.4–0.6m thick. This overlay a natural sand deposit which, nearer the river, was overlain by grey clay.
In the three central trenches a layer of broken brick, including some burnt and vitrified lumps, and brick powder, overlay the garden soil. This deposit was found in the three central trenches and was up to 0.15m thick.
No archaeological remains were found.
