Monitoring of topsoil removal was conducted on 1–3 March 2005. Two ditches were revealed. The first was identified extending roughly north-east/south-west across the proposed development area for c. 9m. It appeared to extend beyond the eastern limit of the site. At its west end the ditch became particularly shallow before petering out. It was linear in plan and was 1.1m wide. In section, the ditch was roughly V-shaped with sharp sides and a slightly concave narrow base. It was cut directly into subsoil to a maximum depth of 0.76m.

A second curvilinear ditch was located in the north-west corner of the site, which extended through north to west for c. 8m. It appeared to extend beyond the limit of excavation in both directions. The feature had an average width of 1.3m and appeared to be cut directly into the subsoil. The ditch was located within an area of the proposed development, the driveway access to the site, and therefore was resealed by topsoil.

Editor’s note: Although this licence was issued during 2005, the report on the work was not received in time for inclusion in the bulletin of that year.
