Monitoring was carried out on the site of the former St Nicholas’ Immediate School in the Irish quarter of Carrickfergus during the period 24 January–4 February 2005 prior to development of a new Tesco supermarket on the site. The groundworks entailed the removal of made ground and the excavation of six test-trenches. Evidence of 19th/20th-century activity was found to survive within the confines of the later 20th-century school building in the form of the remains of 19th/20th-century house plots located along the northern side of Minorca Place. The stone foundations of the former buildings followed the same alignment as the currently standing 19th/20th-century terraces along the northern side of Minorca Place and survived up to 1m in depth, with sections of the former red-brick walls surviving in places. No physical evidence of earlier archaeology was detected in this area of the development.
