Monitoring of topsoil removal took place on the site of a proposed development at the Brook Lodge Hotel. The site lies within the southern precinct of the historic town of Carysfort in the townland of Macreddin West. It is located within a small oval-shaped valley and is bound by a meandering stream to the south, the hotel to the east and an enclosed graveyard to the north-west.
Monitoring took place before the construction of four holiday cottages. A total area of 650m2 was stripped. A deposit of burnt-mound material uncovered during a previous assessment by Sinéad Phelan (Excavations 2003, No. 2089, 03E0923) was re-exposed. The area of archaeological significance measured 7.4m (north-south) by 4.5m at 0.15m below the original ground level (83.47m OD). This material would be directly impacted upon by the proposed development. It is due to be excavated under licence 04E1713 during 2005. Nothing else of archaeological significance was uncovered during this programme of monitoring.
