Testing was undertaken at the above development site as a condition of planning permission. The site encompasses the line of the town wall, parts of which are still standing. Nine trenches were excavated across the development site, the majority of which contained peat deposits, attesting to the marsh conditions that prevailed in the area prior to reclamation. The remains of the town wall were not found, due to the insertion of the town’s main sewerage, which appears to follow the line of the wall. However, a stone structure was encountered slightly off the projected line of the wall that may be part of it. A possible ditch, which contained medieval pottery, was also uncovered, as well as several undated gullies.
