Testing was carried out at the above development site in July 2003 (Excavations 2003, No. 2021). The site is located to the north-east of St Mary’s Church, built in the early 13th century, and to the south-west of the medieval Fair Gate. Six trenches were excavated throughout the site, four of which contained archaeological features and deposits, which included pits containing medieval pottery, a drystone wall, a burnt layer containing medieval pottery and floor/roof tile, and a possible ditch.

The sub-structural element of the development was redesigned to take the archaeological deposits into account and preserve the deposits in situ. Monitoring of groundworks was undertaken and nothing of further significance was uncovered.
