Monitoring tool place of the BGE feeder mains in Mullingar, Co. Westmeath. The construction works involved the installation of gas distribution mains within the Anglo-Norman town of Mullingar. The distribution mains consisted of polyethylene SDR11 or 17 and ranged in diameter through 125mm, 0.18m and 0.25m. They were laid in the existing roads at a cover of generally 0.75m in the roadway and the trench width was 0.8m. Construction works were carried out periodically from the months of September to November 2004. Works were carried out on Pearse Street and Oliver Plunkett Street in Mullingar town centre. Existing service trenches excavated in the 1960s were reused for these BGE gas pipes. As a result of these previous works, nothing of archaeological significance was identified during this programme of monitoring.

Construction works are due to recommence in January 2005.
