Testing took place at Kilcleagh, Moate, Co. Westmeath. The development plan includes '10 No. dwellings, 1 No. proprietary treatment unit and associated site works, petrol station with retail shop, underground storage tanks, new forecourt with fuel dispersing pumps and canopy over, vehicle wash facilities, store, ancillary accommodation, ground surfacing and associated drainage'. The proposed development lies within the curtilage of a protected structure (B221). Ten test-trenches were excavated at 15–20m intervals along the site.
The remains of a probable prehistoric burnt mound were found in Trench 9. The burnt-mound spread measured 6m in length and was exposed for a width of 2m in the trench. The stratigraphy comprised charcoal-rich clay and heat-shattered sandstones and was uncovered to a depth of 0.2m. Mitigation measures included excavation of the burnt-mound material, as it will be impacted upon by the proposed development.
