Monitoring of topsoil-stripping on the location of an extension to a gravel quarry was carried out in March 2004. This was the second phase of monitoring under this licence. The first phase, for a previous extension to the quarry, was carried out by Elizabeth Connolly in August 2002 (Excavations 2002, No. 1858). The extension covered an area of approximately five acres on a long gravel esker. Approximately 350m southeast of the site, Dunegan Castle is sited on a prominence of another gravel ridge, while 330m to the south-west is a ringfort. Topsoil lay over orange boulder clay, which in turn lay over the unsorted gravels of the esker. No features of archaeological significance were recorded, although one medieval jug handle was recovered from the topsoil.
