This work was undertaken as part of a programme of testing ahead of the proposed realignment of the N6 Dublin-Galway carriageway. The site is one of sixteen sites of archaeological potential identified during the compilation of an EIS. It is close to the western boundary of a field that is currently in rough pasture, at Chainage point 35,200m. The site is about 40m to the south of Cornaher Lough and the surrounding landscape is quite even, though often very wet and boggy.
The site consists of a whitethorn tree and the area surrounding it. The tree, which is c. 1.9m in height, is close to the western boundary of the field and an area measuring 8m by 4m had been fenced off around it.
The tree had been removed prior to the archaeologist's arrival. It was decided that a series of trenches would be excavated in the supposed former location of the tree to check for the presence of any associated archaeology. No evidence of archaeological activity was uncovered.
