Monitoring of ground disturbance activities in Athlone townland was requested. There are no known archaeological sites recorded from the development land or its immediate environs and it is outside the zone of archaeological potential for the medieval town of Athlone. Monitoring identified that portions of the site had previously been disturbed by gravel extraction. The remainder of the site, which was low-lying and heavily waterlogged, had stratigraphy composed of 0.2m of peaty topsoil overlying a leached white clay subsoil. No features or stratigraphy of an archaeological nature were identified.
