Monitoring at Ardmore was carried out during Phase 1 of the development of an IDA business park. The site is located c. 2km east-south-east of the centre of Mullingar town in a greenfield site of c. 30ha in area bounded to the south by the Royal Canal. Phase 1 consists of the construction of 700m of road infrastructure, including drainage and services. The development area contains two enclosures (SMR 19:81 and 19:82), both of which are protected by fenced buffer zones. A geophysical survey was carried out by Martina McCarthy of GeoArc Ltd in June 2002 (02R055). A number of anomalies were identified during the initial reconnaissance magnetic susceptibility area survey, which were interpreted as agricultural activity, enclosures and potential structural remains. Test excavations of these anomalies in 2002 by Martin Byrne (Excavations 2002, No. 1824, 02E1411) found nothing of archaeological significance. The proposed access road does not directly impact on any of these identified anomalies.
Monitoring was carried out for all of the groundworks associated with the soil strip for the access road and services. No features of archaeological significance were encountered.
