Monitoring was undertaken further to granted planning permission to construct an apartment block at Thomas Street. Piling was used to facilitate the laying of foundations.

As part of the preparatory works for piling, an engineering test-pit was monitored. This pit measured 2.8m by 0.7m and 2m deep. No archaeological stratigraphy was revealed. Its upper 1.1m comprised loosely deposited post-medieval rubble and building debris infill. This infill overlaid 0.4m of an orange/brown silty clay which in turn lay over a mid-grey sandy clay, 0.5m thick. As part of the preparatory works for piling, it was necessary to strip the overburden from the site. Its removal was monitored. The overburden was similar to the upper 1m of rubble infill in the engineering test-pit. This infill varied in depth from 0.8m to 1.2m and consistently overlaid an orange/brown silty clay that occurred throughout the site. Piles were driven into this orange/brown deposition. No archaeological remains were uncovered during the monitoring works.
