Monitoring was undertaken within the confines of the zone of archaeological potential for the city of Waterford as part of the Waterford broadband scheme. Due to the high potential of encountering archaeological deposits within this area, the broadband trenches were contained within the boundaries of recent service cuts. This was facilitated in a number of streets by the extensive groundworks associated with the main drainage scheme of the previous years. In total, six walls were uncovered during the scheme, four in Arundel Square and two in High Street. It was noticeable that extensive modern ground disturbance had occurred around, and in close proximity to, these features. No evidence was discovered during this scheme to conclusively offer a date for these walls, although one sherd of pottery was located within the grey sandy clay adjacent to one of them. An examination of cartographic sources could not conclusively establish the function of the walls. No evidence was found for the gates at the terminus of Henrietta Street and Exchange Street. The levels for the trenches opened along these streets were kept very shallow and tracked the line of the main drainage scheme. The trenches extended through backfill associated with the main drainage.
