Monitoring was required as part of the planning schedule for a commercial development adjacent to the historic town of Roscrea (SMR 12:10). The buildings on site had been assessed prior to demolition, but nothing of significance was noted. The foundations were excavated into orange silty clay. At the south-east of the site, at the road boundary, cobbling was exposed 0.15m below the ground surface and for 2m at the southern side of the baulk. The cobbles were limestone and measured on average 0.2m by 0.3m by 0.1m. In this baulk, a culvert was also exposed, 0.25m below the surface. It was constructed of random rubble walling of limestone and capped with limestone slabs. The blocks measured on average 0.3m by 0.4m by 0.15m and the slabs were 0.1m in width. These features date to the 19th century, probably to when the current streetscape was developed. Neither feature has been affected by the development.
