Testing was undertaken before construction of a two-storey commercial development. Test-trenches revealed medieval and post-medieval garden soil layers, with structural timbers and a wooden peg at the base of the medieval layer, which also contained pottery, animal bone and leather, typical domestic refuse, dating this layer to the 13th–14th centuries. The pottery sherds found were mainly those of local/Irish wares, although some sherds of English pottery were also represented, lying on the subsoil, towards the street side of the site. These have been interpreted as indicating the remains of a structure, due to their location on what would have been a busy thoroughfare in medieval times leading from the Dominican priory to the main street/market place.
The developers have yet to decide what type of foundations to employ in the event of construction, but suitable mitigatory measures have been suggested, to include at minimum monitoring.
