Monitoring of ground disturbance associated with the construction of a two-storey extension to an existing building was undertaken, as the site lay within the zone of archaeological potential for the town of Cashel. The extension to the property measured 14m long by 9m wide. Strip foundations 0.9m by 0.75m deep were excavated.
During excavation of the east-west foundation, a wall 1.3m wide was uncovered at a depth of 0.4m. The wall was orientated north-south, comprised of randomly coursed mortar-bonded limestone. The wall had been disturbed to the south by a water pipe. On the western side, the wall was abutted by the foundation of the existing building. Extending out from the wall on the eastern side were four flat stones that may have been part of a flagstone floor. A second wall was uncovered at a depth of 0.15m at the northwest corner of the site. It was exposed for a length of 1.3m by 0.92m wide.
The date of the walls was not established, but they were likely to have been late medieval or early post-medieval in origin. To avoid excavation and to accommodate preservation in situ of the walls, it was agreed between the developer and the Department of the Environment to redesign the foundations. In the new design, the foundation was stepped over the flagstone floor and walls.
