Testing was carried out on 15 April 2004 in advance of the construction of an extension on to the west gable of a two-storey house. The site of the proposed development lies adjacent to Synone Castle and within its zone of archaeological potential. This site includes Synone Castle and an associated field system.

Three trenches (c. 1.2-1.4m wide and c. 0.8m deep) were excavated by mechanical excavator on the footprint of the development; no archaeological features or artefacts were uncovered during this work. The testing found evidence that the area had been severely truncated by modern services and the ground level had been altered in post-medieval and modern times.

A specific requirement of the National Museum of Ireland was that the excavated spoil should be examined for the recovery of potential small finds. No finds of an archaeological nature were made from this exercise.
