The development at Ballynacourty House, Glen of Aherlow, involved an extension to the stable complex as well as the construction of a new septic treatment plant. The proposed development is within the constraint zone of a castle. This monument no longer survives and the area circled on the RMP map is that of Ballynacourty House, which replaced the castle as a residence in the 18th century. The demesne house was burnt down in 1922 during the Civil War and the surviving buildings consist of a courtyard, stables and walled garden. Three test-trenches were excavated within those areas of the site where maximum ground disturbance was envisaged. Trench 1 was placed along the footprint of the restaurant extension to the north-east of the coach house. A second trench was opened in the proposed new percolation area outside the walled garden. Trench 3 extended along the route of the pipeline from the existing septic tank at the rear of the coach house to the walled garden. No archaeological deposits or artefacts were uncovered during the removal of the topsoil to natural ground.
