Excavations at the site of the proposed extension to the rear of 46 Wine Street, Sligo, took place on 9 November 2004. The extension will be attached to the original building to the north and to a 1980s extension to the east. No. 46 Wine Street is listed as being of regional importance in the Sligo Town Architectural Heritage Study 2000 and is described as 'a terraced two bay three storey house, c. 1830 with an extension to the rear, c. 1980'. The site of the proposed extension is bounded to the west by a large stone-wall property division and to the south by an open yard used as a carpark. Prior to testing, the small boiler house and toilet extension was demolished and the concrete slab laid across the remainder of the site was lifted.
A small tracked mini-digger with a 0.8m-wide toothless bucket was employed to excavate a single north-south-running trench across the footprint of the proposed extension. The depth of modern fill and service trenches across the area of the proposed extension exceeded the depth of the proposed foundations. The archaeological testing did not reveal any features or finds of archaeological significance.
