This application was for a 3m by 4m conservatory extension to a mid-1970s house. The constraint area for the Kilmacowen monastic site, medieval church and graveyard, SMR 20:54, just about reaches the applicant's property. A digger with a toothless bucket was used to remove the topsoil down to the underlying gravel. Following this, the polygonal foundation trench, about 0.5m wide and about the same in depth, was opened. This cut into gravelly, glacially deposited material. It is most unlikely that any archaeological levels ever existed here.
